There are natural and delicious sweeteners that won't wreck your diet, and even have therapeutic 'side benefits'
No arena of health and wellness is more debatable than what we should be eating. Looking back through time, the foods that constitute a healthy diet have changed so dramatically, you can literally mark the passage of time by the coming and going of dietary fads.
One factor that is contributing to America's growing problem with weight is our obsession with sugar. You probably don't need to see the results of a clinical study to believe that the more sugary calories you consume, the greater your risks of obesity[3]. What you may not know, is that what passes for sugar these days is actually a hyper-sweetened extract of one of the cheapest, most heavily-sprayed, GMO-pervasive crops on the planet. Why Sugar Isn't Sugar Anymore Despite a marked decrease in consumption of refined cane and beet sugars over the last generation, we are taking in more dietary sugar overall, thanks to the prevalence of corn-based sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup, in nearly everything on grocery store shelves[4]. Switching to corn-based sweeteners is a case of jumping from the funnel cake grease into the fire! Corn syrup has become the go-to sweetening agent for processed foods due to its low cost and high concentration (at least 1.5 times that of cane sugar). Thanks to government subsidies, corn is alluringly cheap for food and beverage companies that need a steady supply of sweetness. Corn is also a top GMO crop with at least 92% of the nation's corn supply being genetically modified to withstand large doses of herbicides[5]. Setting aside the shocking effects of GMO consumption, this intense concentration of simple sugar is wreaking havoc on the collective metabolism. Studies abound correlating intake of high-fructose sweeteners to increased risks of obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, fatty liver disease, diabetes, and more[6]. What About Zero-Calorie Sweeteners? Aspartame, Equal, sucralose, Splenda, saccharin: they go by many names but do any of them sound truly sweet? Not when you read the over 100 scientific abstractsGreenmedinfo has collected on the perils of artificial sweeteners. Chemical fascimiles of sugar, these unnatural compounds can be far worse than the real thing. Linked to increased risks of kidney disease, metabolic dysfunction, diabetes, and obesity, these calorie-free sugar substitutes trick consumers into thinking that previously unhealthy foods can get "a sugar-free pass." But fake sugars are far from harmless. Studies show consuming synthetic sweeteners generates excessive cravings for the sweet taste, leading to weight gain and other negative effects linked to excessive sugar consumption[7]. While it might be tempting to think that these sugar imposters can help you bypass the weight and still eat the treats, if you value your health, steer clear of these dietary destroyers! Nature Has the Solutions Wondering what options this leaves you when only something sweet will do? Fortunately, nature has got you covered. Here are four solutions for satisfying your sweet tooth that won't rot your teeth, create blood sugar imbalance, or cause weight gain. In fact, these natural wonders pack some amazing health benefits! Xylitol Xylitol is a sugar alcohol derived from xylose - a crystalline sugar found in birch bark[8]. Sweet like sugar but with only 40% of the calories, xylitol is fast becoming the preferred sweetener of health-conscious consumers. Low-carb dieters will find xylitol appealing, with less than a quarter of the carbohydrates found in cane sugar. It also stands apart from synthetic sweeteners thanks to its natural origins. Besides birch trees, xylitol is found in the cellular structure of fruits like raspberries, and in vegetables like the corn-cob. Even our bodies produce xylitol (between 5-15 grams per day) during normal metabolic processes. With a glycemic rating of 13, xylitol is metabolized around eight times slower than regular sugar, making it a safer choice for diabetics. Unlike sugar, which provokes the release of insulin in response to its consumption, xylitol is metabolized independently of insulin in the gut. It metabolizes slower and steadier than sugar, making it a much safer sweetener for hypoglycemics and the sugar-sensitive. And there's good news for sufferers of cavities or Candida: Xylitol actually discourages the bacterial growth that feeds these conditions. The bacteria that cause candida, dental caries, and even Streptococcus mutans, thrive in acid-based environments, with sugar as their food of choice. Xylitol is non-fermentable, creating an alkaline reaction in the body that bacteria find inhospitable. Xylitol consumption has been shown to dramatically decrease cavities and ear and throat infections, among other infectious organisms. The dental health community are one of the biggest supporters of Xylitol. Studies have shown that plaque build-up and dental caries can be reduced by 80% with the introduction of moderate amounts of xylitol (up to half an ounce per day). Research also indicates that consuming xylitol may increase bone strength and bone density. *Important Notes: Xylitol can have a laxative effect, so start slowly. It is best to obtain Xylitol from a manufacturer who uses birch rather than corn. Finally, Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs, so please keep it away from Fido! Xylitol is sometimes made from corn, which includes GMO corn. Look for the higher quality, non-GMO certified, and best of all: birch tree derived form. Stevia 300 times sweeter than sugar and without caloric content, the Stevia plant has been used by native people to sweeten food and drink for centuries. Stevia's popularity as a modern sugar substitute grew in the 1990's, and new research confirms what tribal cultures knew: this plant provides a safe, affordable and tasty alternative to expensive and potentially dangerous sweeteners. The study[9], published in August 2017, calls Stevia "a suitable calorie-free sweetener," with both "pharmacological and therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, and anticancer." Researchers further heralded Stevia's positive effects on those metabolic conditions aggravated by excess sugar consumption, namely obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Stevia reduces blood sugar, reduces blood pressure, combats infections, and reduces risks of diabetes. One study even found that consuming stevia was as effective as a popular oral antidiabetic drug, but with fewer side effects. If you haven't tried Stevia in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised by new formulations. What began as a strong-tasting plant extract only available in health food stores, is now widely available in crystallized-sugar form, as a finely distilled concentrate, and in formulations that approximate the less-sweet taste of cane sugar, but without the negative effec Identified as containing more than 181 health-promoting substances[10], honey converts the vital, healing energy of plants into a medium that is perfect for human consumption. Rich in phytonutrients (nutrients absorbed from plants), raw honey is renowned worldwide for having powerful anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties[11]. Raw, unfiltered honey is very different from the pasteurized product you find on most grocery store shelves. Nearly all commercially-produced honey is heated to kill potentially harmful bacteria, reduce crystallization, and improve product flow. Unfortunately, this process also kills the vital, living enzymes and good bacteria which make raw honey one of the world's oldest-known superfoods. The bacteria in raw honey serves as a prebiotic: a substance containing helpful microorganisms that aid in the process of digestion. When consumed raw, honey's natural enzymes aid in the breakdown and assimilation of the many nutrients it contains. Raw honey is also rich in powerful antioxidants called phenolic compounds, known to play an important role in cancer prevention[12]. These compounds found in honey have also shown promise in reducing arterial blockages and lowering overall risks associated with cardiovascular disease[13]. Perhaps most profound of all is that raw honey contains probiotic strains that are so ancient that one form of Lactobacillus present with certain varieties is believed to be of a lineage 80 million years old. Molasses Blackstrap molasses, known to sugar-refiners as "final molasses," refers to the thick, brown syrup that is the end result of boiling sugar cane during the production of table sugar. What sets molasses apart from cane sugar, besides the obvious appearance, is its high nutritional value. Unlike its nutritionally bankrupt cousin, a 3.5 oz serving of blackstrap molasses contains more than a quarter of your daily supply of vital minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and B vitamins[14]. Molasses delivers this nutritional punch with much less sugar, thanks to being at the end of the line of the crystalline-sugar extraction process[15]. Molasses has long been a popular folk remedy, treating everything from menstrual cramps to constipation[16]. An old wives' tale credits an elixir of molasses and milk with having the power to maintain endless youth and beauty. There may be some truth to this, thanks to molasses' high antioxidant content[17]. Polyphenols, the plant compounds that imbue antioxidant properties, are abundant in molasses, and have been recognized for having anti-cancer properties[18] in clinical studies. A 2011 study showed that adding molasses to a high-fat diet had the effect of reducing body weight and body fat percentages, thanks to decreased calorie absorption. Researchers concluded that "supplementing food with molasses extract might be a way to address the escalating rates of overweight and obesity."[19] Rich in copper, iron, and calcium, molasses can play a vital role in maintaining healthy blood and bones. This makes molasses a great alternative to non-nutritive sweeteners for pregnant or nursing women, or women who are trying to become pregnant. It also makes a great dietary supplement for women at risk of developing osteoporosis. These four, healthful alternatives to sugar prove that craving a taste of sweetness doesn't have to cause cavities, promote weight gain, or lead to blood sugar imbalances. On the contrary, when we look to nature, we find natural foods which actually sweeten our health, as well as our palates.

6/17/2019 0 Comments SPLENDA FOUND TO HAVE A DIZZING ARRAY OF SAFETY CONCERNS...READ THIS BEFORE YOU ADD THE SWEETENER TO YOUR COFFEE https://www.naturalnews.com/2019-06-07-splenda-found-to-have-a-dizzying-array-of-safety-concerns.htmlAnyone who values their health should avoid using Splenda at all costs. An increasing number of scientific literature warns about the numerous adverse effects of using this artificial sweetener.
Earlier animal-based studies established links between sucralose and the onset of leukemia and diabetes. But a 2013 review uncovered the hidden health issues of Splenda long after many people consumed large quantities of it. The sweetener is a highly recommended ingredient for baked goods. However, the baking process triggers chemical reactions in sucralose that produce toxic chlorinated compounds. These include dioxins, long-lived chemical compounds usually found in industrial processes and considered to be carcinogens. Chlorinated compounds are the tip of the iceberg of health problems associated with sucralose. Researchers from North Carolina State University identified many other concerns that the manufacturers of the artificial sweetener – McNeil Nutritionals, a subsidiary company of Johnson & Johnson – did not catch during testing or reveal to the public. (Related: Detrimental to gut health, metabolism, blood sugar: Research shows the toxic effects of sucralose.) Splenda is not safe at all, especially for diabetics and kidsDespite being advertised as safe for people with diabetes, Splenda changes metabolic parameters by raising blood sugar and insulin levels. It disrupts a wide range of organochlorine class pharmaceutical drugs and triggers bodily functions that it should not be able to influence. Sucralose leaves behind unknown compounds that pose potential consequences on health and the environment. It reduces the number of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, increases the population of harmful bacteria, affects the recovery of the gut microflora for months, and changes the pH level of the intestinal environment.Last but not least, the NC State researchers found that McNeil and Johnson & Johnson have not yet resolved the toxicological problems of exposure to sucralose over extended periods. As of the time of the study, no one knew if excessive use of Splenda causes damage to DNA, produces toxic compounds during baking, accumulates inside the body instead of getting broken down and expelled, or interacts with treatments. The most severe problem identified by the report was the dubious safety of heated sucralose. The manufacturers claimed that Splenda remains stable at cooking temperatures. However, the results of multiple independent studies showed that exposure to heat levels starting at 246 F (119 C) causes the sweetener to break down. Heated sucralose produces dioxins and other toxic substances that can cause cancerHeated sucralose releases chloride ions, chloropopanols, dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, polychlorinated bisphenyls, and polychlorinated naphthalenes. These substances damage cells and could increase the risks of cancers and tumorous growths. Dioxins are the most dangerous of these byproducts. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers these chlorinated compounds to be a persistent organic pollutant (POP). Persistent organic pollutants last for very long periods in the environment. They are highly resistant to getting degraded by natural processes such as sunlight and bacterial action. As long as they remain intact, POPs will continue to cause havoc. Splenda possesses the same levels of durability as chlorinated compounds. Tests showed that sucralose survives purification techniques used by water treatment plants, so harmful concentrations could have already accumulated in bodies of water. Its possible presence in sources of drinking water might pose severe threats to wildlife and human health. To avoid the risk of diseases and disorders associated with the consumption of artificial sweeteners, consumers should avoid using Splenda (sucralose) and similar artificial food additives, as well as any food product that uses such toxic ingredients. Instead, they should use natural sweeteners such as honey and stevia, which bring a welcome sweet taste and even beneficial effects on health. Dove Medical Press
Published on Mar 8, 2018 Video abstract of original research paper “Aggressiveness, violence, homicidality, homicide, and Lyme disease” published in the open access Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment journal by Robert C Bransfield. Background: No study has previously analyzed aggressiveness, homicide, and Lyme disease (LD). Materials and methods: Retrospective LD chart reviews analyzed aggressiveness, compared 50 homicidal with 50 non-homicidal patients, and analyzed homicides. Results: Most aggression with LD was impulsive, sometimes provoked by intrusive symptoms, sensory stimulation or frustration and was invariably bizarre and senseless. About 9.6% of LD patients were homicidal with the average diagnosis delay of 9 years. Postinfection findings associated with homicidality that separated from the non-homicidal group within the 95% confidence interval included suicidality, sudden abrupt mood swings, explosive anger, paranoia, anhedonia, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle, disinhibition, nightmares, depersonalization, intrusive aggressive images, dissociative episodes, derealization, intrusive sexual images, marital/family problems, legal problems, substance abuse, depression, panic disorder, memory impairments, neuropathy, cranial nerve symptoms, and decreased libido. Seven LD homicides included predatory aggression, poor impulse control, and psychosis. Some patients have selective hyperacusis to mouth sounds, which I propose may be the result of brain dysfunction causing a disinhibition of a primitive fear of oral predation. Conclusion: LD and the immune, biochemical, neurotransmitter, and the neural circuit reactions to it can cause impairments associated with violence. Many LD patients have no aggressiveness tendencies or only mild degrees of low frustration tolerance and irritability and pose no danger; however, a lesser number experience explosive anger, a lesser number experience homicidal thoughts and impulses, and much lesser number commit homicides. Since such large numbers are affected by LD, this small percent can be highly significant. Much of the violence associated with LD can be avoided with better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of LD. Read the original research paper here https://www.dovepress.com/aggressiven According to the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine’s website Simple Steps, an estimate 3% to 5% of tooth extractions can result in a dry socket. This is a painful condition that can take a while to treat with conventionally. There are conventional treatments for dry socket; however, if you prefer a fast and effective alternative remedy, clove oil is a natural painkiller and has antibacterial properties to protect against infection.
Dry Socket A dry socket can occur after a tooth is extracted and the resulting blood clot becomes dislodged prematurely. Usually after an extraction a blood clot will form in the empty socket left behind. After a while, gum and bone tissue will begin to form in the socket replacing the blood clot. If the blood clot is washed away too quickly, it will expose the bone underneath which develops into an extremely painful condition. It can also be difficult to treat with conventional medicine. Symptoms If you develop a dry socket you will immediately realize that something is wrong. You will notice intense pain radiating from your jaw to your ear within a few days of the extraction. Some people also develop bad breath, known as halitosis, after an infection begins to take hold in the socket. It is important to see a dentist immediately if you experience any of these symptoms to ensure that there is no remaining fragments of tooth or bone in the socket. Clove Oil According to the University of Hawaii, clinical evidence suggests that clove oil provides relief from the pain of toothaches. It has been used in traditional medicine as an antiseptic and topical analgesic. Clove oil has been used for much more than just a spice, it can also be used to treat certain skin disorders such as rashes, to relieve nausea and even as an expectorant. James Duke, author of the “The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook,” writes that clove oil can be used against infection due to its anti-microbial and antibacterial qualities. The German Commission’s E List includes clove oil as a topical anesthetic and it is used in many dental preparations for its pain-killing properties. Treatment for Dry Socket If you visit your dentist for treatment for a dry socket, he will most likely give you some form of anesthesia for the pain. Traditional dentists will flush the socket to remove any bacteria and debris and will then pack the socket with a medicated dressing. A few dentists will use dressings that contain clove oil to numb the area and kill any remaining infection. It’s important to ask your dentist to use clove oil if it’s not his regular practice. Alternatively, you can place a drop or two of organic clove essential oil on the area to relieve pain and speed healing. Do this several times daily until the dry socket is healed. Clove oil is very strong and should be diluted with a small amount of olive or almond oil. Duration Seeking treatment for a dry socket immediately will help to significantly reduce the pain, but it may still take several weeks for the socket to heal. Those with existing medical conditions such as diabetes may find that it takes even longer for the socket to heal completely. Prevention Preventing a dry socket from occurring in the first place is much easier than attempting to treat one. Maintaining proper dental hygiene is essential. Always ask your dentist to perform a full dental cleaning before extraction to lessen the chance of debris and tarter contaminating the open wound. Never use a straw for drinking as this may lead to the blood clot becoming dislodged. Cigarette smoke drastically slows down the healing process so always avoid smoking after an extraction. If you are given an antibacterial rinse, avoid rinsing your mouth out vigorously in order to ensure the blood clot remains intact. Dilute some clove oil in vegetable oil and dab it all around the tooth and gum before extraction. You can place cotton balls in your mouth to keep your lips away from the gum during treatment. The oil may sting slightly but this is to be expected. Precautions and Availability Never use undiluted clove oil on your skin or in your mouth as it is very strong and may burn the gums. Always dilute it in vegetable oil before use. Clove oil is available from health food stores and pharmacies that stock essential oils. If you experience any unpleasant side effects, discontinue use immediately and consult your dentist. Just like the last "crisis" a few years ago, everywhere one looks there is a mountain of hysteria and strident condemnations of parents who choose not to vaccinate. Public figures and talking heads on both the left and the right bought into the panic and called loudly for such measures as mandatory vaccinations nationwide and prohibitions against unvaccinated students attending schools.
Even the President appears to have given in to the hysteria and recommended vaccinations in spite of his previous anti-vaccination stance. RFK, Jr. could you please have a word with the man? Good grief, folks! Take a deep breath folks and look at the facts about the so-called crisis. Read More: http://www.tbyil.com/Putting_Measles_Mania_in_Proper_Perspective_Tony_Isaacs.htm 5/31/2019 0 Comments Anonymous. As the measles debate wears on, we’re hearing a lot about the “spread of misinformation” in relationship to vaccines. Typically, this term is used to describe the efforts of vaccine safety advocates to expose the truth about vaccines to the public, but with the current backlash and push for mandatory vaccination, we’re seeing a new level of misinformation in the press that warrants the attention of every American.
The truth is, it’s easy to accept what we see in print without taking the time to really consider what it’s saying…and whether it’s true. At a time when the nation is more divided than ever, it’s vitally important that we check the facts before accepting what we read in the media…and while it’s easier than ever to spread misinformation by simply hitting “share,” the internet has also made it easier than ever to quickly do a fact check and research claims for yourself. This is especially important when it comes to situations like the one unfolding in New York. The state has reacted by placing the blame on one population in particular when it comes the spread of measles: The Orthodox Jewish community. Major media outlets have been feverishly publishing titles like the Washington Post’s recent “New York City vaccination order shines spotlight on insular Jewish community”. The claims made by the media and government officials have circulated throughout the country...but are they correct? The state claims that poor vaccination rates in Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods are to blame for the “epidemic” of measles that’s going on in New York. They’ve targeted these neighborhoods, forcing mandatory vaccination on thousands under the threat of court charges and fines, and officials have shut down Yeshivas (Orthodox Jewish schools) over immunization records. Six thousand children who attended 60 mostly Jewish schools and child care centers have been unable to attend class, and articles are circulating throughout the nation about the measles epidemic being started by Orthodox Jews returning from visiting Israel…where measles has been active. “I think it just opened up the door for everybody to say whatever they wanted to say,” said Steve Gold (chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council) in an interview with The New York Times. “And they’re putting, the way it looks right now, 100 percent blame on the Orthodox community.” Why is New York blaming its Orthodox Jews for spreading the measles? Do Orthodox Jews actually vaccinate their children less than other people, for religious reasons…as is being implied by the media? The answer is a solid “No,” and in fact, there is evidence to the contrary. A peer-reviewed study was conducted that proved that Orthodox Jewish communities vaccinate their children at the same rate as other communities, and came to the following conclusion: “For all immunizations, uptake in the strictly Orthodox Jewish community is not significantly different from that of the District. Responding parents had positive attitudes to the value and safety of immunizations but wished better access to services. Health professionals need to question their perceptions so that efforts to improve uptake amongst ethnic minority groups are based on facts and are responsive to identified needs.” What about the outbreaks in Israel, which is where New York’s “epidemic” was supposed to have originated? It turns out that Israel actually has a very high vaccination rate for the MMR (and other vaccines). In fact, Jerusalem has a 96.5% rate, and rates in Israel range from 94% at the lowest to over 98%. 5/31/2019 0 Comments How to Use Witch Hazel to Clear Up Your Skin Fast By Jillian Levy, CHHC April 6, 2018Today, we have hundreds of different beauty products available to us — acne washes, toners, scrubs and so on — but what did people use thousands of years ago before commercial chemicals existed to help heal their skin? When it comes to natural skin care, one time-honored medicinal plant is witch hazel, which American Indians relied on for fighting swelling, sores and infections. There may be no plant more beneficial to your skin, as research showcases the many advantages witch hazel provides. For instance, thanks to its astringent properties, it’s one of the most effective natural acne treatments known to man — and it’s even been shown to help protect against skin cancer!
So if you’re looking for cleaner, healthier skin, look no further than witch hazel and its seemingly infinite benefits for your epidermis. What Is Witch Hazel?Witch hazel (which has the species name Hamamelis virginiana), a type of plant native to North America, is a member of the Hamamelidaceae plant family. Sometimes also called winterbloom, the virginiana bark and leaves are used to make a skin-healing astringent that’s capable of naturally reducing acne, blisters, insect bites, poison ivy, inflammation and much more. The most popular use for witch hazel is for skin care, since its strong antioxidant and astringent properties are perfect for killing bacteria that lives within skin’s pores, stopping cellular damage that can lead to skin cancer, preventing signs of aging, and speeding up healing. Because of its effectiveness, today, you’ll find witch hazel extract added to a variety of over-the-counter beauty and medicinal products: anti-aging serums, shaving cream and aftershave, bug repellent, nail treatments, hemorrhoid products, and shampoo, just to name a few. How Witch Hazel WorksHow can witch hazel do so much? High levels of healing active ingredients reduce inflammation, cellular damage and swelling, while also soothing wounds. The bark, twigs and leaves of the plant are used to extract active constituents called polyphenols and tannins. They’re then added to either alcohol or water to make a concentrated product called witch hazel water, Hamamelis water or distilled witch hazel extract. The extract can be used topically (on the surface of the skin) or taken internally just like medicine in order to help stop symptoms from diarrhea, colds, mucus colitis, vomiting, coughing, the flu and more. Tannins are responsible for making witch hazel extract a natural astringent, since they remove excess oil from skin. This is the reason why witch hazel is one of the most popular natural acne treatments worldwide and is used in dozens of over-the-counter treatment gels, washes and lotions. When it comes to the products that you apply directly to your skin, you always want to treat the surface of your body how you would the inside: Avoid as many chemicals and toxins as possible. Witch hazel offers benefits over other beauty products because it’s completely natural, free of environmental pollutants, irritating ingredients, fake fragrances and other contaminants. In addition to tannins, witch hazel is high in compounds called “gallate esters,” which include proanthocyanidins, hydrolyzable tannins (galloylated sugars) and methyl gallate. Witch hazel extract is considered to be polyphenolic and has been shown to help inhibit cell proliferation in cancerous human cells. Studies show that it is capable of stopping mutated cell cycles and inducing apoptosis (death of dangerous cells). (1) Because witch hazel is a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it’s effective as a “free radical scavenger,” meaning it helps protect against DNA damage and tumor growth. Oxidative stress and free radical damage build up over time from exposure to things like UV light, pollution, a poor diet, stress and so on. Plants like witch hazel that are high in polyphenols are the same kind used to create anti-aging nutritional supplements that slow down disease development by protecting cells. (2) Common Witch Hazel UsesThe skin is our largest and most vulnerable organ, so it could use all the support it can get. Skin is our natural barrier to the outside world and provides us with protection against UV radiation, chemicals in our food supply, bacteria and other germs, and environmental pollutants. All of the “stress” that our bodies deal with every day, both internally and externally, show up on our skin in the form of aging, puffiness, infections, inflammation and sensitivities. That’s why we rely on eating and using natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to help curb inflamed and diseased cells. Herbal plant therapies for skin disorders have been used for thousands of years, and today many traditional herbs are being reintroduced, studied extensively and experiencing a resurgence in popularity since many chemical treatments don’t always work or they have harsh side effects. As the authors of the book “Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects” point out, more and more people are turning to the use of herbs for the following reasons: the side effects of chemical drugs, wanting to return to nature, being a part of the green revolution, and wanting to use more organic and safe products. (3) Witch hazel has been used for centuries to naturally help treat and prevent:
But the benefits of witch hazel aren’t limited to the skin — it’s also an antioxidant and has antibacterial properties, which means it can fight symptoms caused by all kinds of illnesses. (4) It’s used for soothing sore throats, toothaches, coughs, hemorrhoids, ear infections and allergies. Witch Hazel Benefits — for Skin, Hair, Teeth and MoreWitch hazel products include Hamamelis water, distilled witch hazel extract and witch hazel tea. Ideally, purchase a pure organic witch hazel, and always check that the ingredient label lists the correct species name — Hamamelis virginiana. For sensitive or dry skin, you might want to use a non-alcoholic witch hazel water over an extract, since alcohol can add to dryness and scabbing. 1. Reduce AcneAs a natural home remedy for acne, applying witch hazel to acne-prone skin can help slow down inflammation, redness, oiliness and bleeding. As a natural cleanser, it’s capable of reducing bacteria growth on the skin and speeds up the time needed to heal infections or scabs. (5) Another benefit for sensitive skin is that it reduces the look of pores (although no product can actually shrink pores) and helps stop excess oil production, sweating, and development of blackheads or whiteheads, which can contribute to breakouts and tempt you to pick at your skin! (6) Instead of opening up a pimple and making the problem worse, put witch hazel directly on the skin wherever you notice a zit forming or where acne tends to break out. It’s even more effective when used in combination with other antibacterials like tea tree oil, coconut oil or apple cider vinegar. Skip irritating acne products and turn to witch hazel to lower the severity of blemishes forming under the skin, prevent blackheads caused by dried sebum buildup in pores, and stop swelling and redness if you already picked at your acne. Witch hazel can curb signs of past irritations and deal with skin infections gently. Dab witch hazel on your skin with a clean cotton ball or cotton pads up to several times per day anywhere you experience irritation, starting slowly and giving your skin time to adjust. 2. Fight Signs of Aging and Damage from Sun ExposureIf you’re looking for a natural way to tighten the skin and slow down signs of aging like scars, redness, discoloration, dryness and puffiness around the eyes, then look no further than witch hazel. Witch hazel tightens skin and is protective against skin cancer, melanoma and other damage caused by UV light because of its protective polyphenols and tannin antioxidants. These inhibit the proliferation of melanoma cells and help protect healthy skin cells into older age. (7) Keep your skin free from irritating chemical products that can alter oil production and increase dryness. Witch hazel has been shown to help protect collagen and skin elasticity just as well as many commercial beauty products. You can easily blend witch hazel with vitamin E oil and other natural ingredients to make your own Homemade Anti-Aging Serum. Then apply it to discolored skin, bruises, old acne marks and bites to help fade their appearance and reverse damage. Combine it with other skin-saving oils like evening primrose, frankincense and tea tree oils for even better results. Witch hazel’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it a great way to preserve skin’s elasticity, saving your complexion and helping you deal with the effects of environmental stress on your skin. To lower eye puffiness and inflammation, apply diluted witch hazel to the area around the eyes before bed, being careful not to get any in the eyes. To prevent varicose veins from developing, add witch hazel to a cloth or swab and rub it into the skin wherever you see bruising and veins forming. 3. Treat Insect BitesMany bug repellents and commercial products used for treating insect bites contain witch hazel. Wondering how to get rid of mosquito bites? People turn to witch hazel to reduce the effects of bug bites, such as pain and swelling from stings, allergies and irritations. Certain studies have found that applying witch hazel cream to skin irritations can curb symptoms just as well as synthetic chemical creams, including dexpanthenol, which is often used to fight skin irritations in children. (8) It can also be used to help speed up healing in scabs or minor cuts because witch hazel extract contains isoproply alcohol, which is another natural disinfecting ingredient that kills bacteria and helps prevent infections. 4. Cleanse Hair and Protect the ScalpUse witch hazel on your hair to help reduce oil buildup — which leaves your hair shinier, healthier and more volumized. It’s also great for removing hair odors, helping with an irritated scalp, or speeding up healing from any bites or acne at the base of the neck when you’re prone to sweating. One study conducted by the Center for Dermatology and Disease in Zurich, Switzerland, found that shampoo containing witch hazel extract helped soothe patients’ irritated scalps, redness, itching and inflammation. After testing the effects of witch hazel on 1,373 patients, a percentage of patients reported improvement in symptoms and better tolerance of other hair products. (9) Add several drops to your shampoo or make your own hair wash using coconut oil, argan oil, witch hazel, and other cleansing essential oils like lemon or orange oil. 5. Prevent Ingrown Hairs and RashesAfter shaving, you can apply witch hazel to any part of the body to slow bleeding from nicks or cuts, prevent bacteria growth and infections within hair follicles, soothe razor burn, and prevent ingrown hairs from forming. Some people also like to the toner along with other healing essential oils to skin after waxing to reduce pain, swelling and bleeding. 6. Stop Ear Infections from DevelopingSince witch hazel is an effective antibacterial, and “swimmer’s ear” or other ear infections are usually caused by bacterial infections, it’s a natural way to treat irritations within the ear canal. To make a natural ear infection remedy, try adding witch hazel extract to an eye dropper to insert several drops into each ear several times a day. Witch hazel helps clear up bacteria overgrowth and infections within the ear; dry up oil, pus and excess sweat; break up wax; and even remove odor. To clean the outside of the ears, apply several drops to a swab and rub around the inside of the ears. 7. Soothe a Sore ThroatSome people like sipping on witch hazel tea (not witch hazel water or a drink made with extract, which contains isopropyl alcohol) to soothe an irritated, infected or sore throat. The natural astringent properties of witch hazel make it beneficial for fighting illnesses that affect the throat, while its soothing properties lower pain and discomfort caused by coughs, strep throat, sore throat, sinus infections, tonsillitis or other throat problems. You can add pure witch hazel (alcohol-free) to a tea mixture with honey to further soothe an inflamed throat. 8. Stop Pet Odor and Bug BitesStop excess bacteria from forming on the surface of your pet’s skin, including in wounds or bites, which can lead to odor. Witch hazel is non-irritating to pets, helps prevent them from getting bug bites by repelling mosquitoes and other insects, can slow down itching or bleeding, and helps cleanse their skin. (10) 9. Treat HemorrhoidsWitch hazel also acts as a hemorrhoids home remedy. You can apply witch hazel water to the skin to help lower pain and inflammation caused by uncomfortable hemorrhoids. It’s useful for relieving itching, irritation, bleeding and burning from hemorrhoids as well. (11) Most experts recommend using hazel water (Hamamelis liquid extract diluted with water) up to six times a day on irritated skin or after every bowel movement. 10. Protect Your Mouth, Lips and GumsIf you have blisters on your lips, inner cheeks or gums, turn to witch hazel to speed healing and get rid of pain and swelling. It’s safe to apply the extract to the inside of your mouth to slow down bleeding, blisters, sores, bad breath odors and infections of the gums, especially when combined with other healing oils like coconut oil or peppermint oil. An easy way to use witch hazel to protect your mouth is to add some to my Homemade Probiotic Toothpaste. You can also use a teaspoon of witch hazel tea with several drops of wintergreen, clove and myrrh oils as a mouthwash, which helps relieve pain from toothaches or teething in infants, prevent infection after oral surgery, and fight bleeding and inflammation from mouth sores. Potential Witch Hazel Side Effects and PrecautionsMost adults and children react well to using witch hazel on their skin and don’t experience any side effects. But there’s always a chance for an allergic reaction or other irritations, especially if you have sensitive skin and spend lots of time in the sun. To be on the safe side, do a skin patch test first, applying a small amount to a patch of skin on your arm or leg to make sure you don’t have a bad reaction. When it comes to taking it internally, it’s considered safe for most people, including pregnant women, although it’s capable of causing minor indigestion or an upset stomach in some people. Keep your dosage low and always follow directions, since taking high doses has been linked to liver problems in some rare cases. Herpes simplex is a virus. That means that there isn’t a known “cure” that will prevent symptoms from returning. But there are things you can do to find relief during an HSV-1 or HSV-2 outbreak.
You may be able to reduce inflammation, irritation, and other symptoms through a mix of lifestyle changes and dietary supplements. However, these remedies aren’t a replacement for a clinical treatment plan. You should always talk to a doctor or other healthcare provider before you try any alternative treatment. They can discuss possible dosage, side effects, and interactions. True home remediesThese tried-and-true home remedies may help ease outbreak-related swelling, itching, and stinging. You probably already have what you need for these remedies in your kitchen cabinet or medicine chest. Warm compressPreliminary researchTrusted Source suggests that it may be helpful to apply heat as soon as you feel a sore forming. If a sore has already formed, heat may help minimize pain and swelling. You can make a dry warm compress by filling a sock halfway with rice and microwaving it for just under a minute. Cool compressYou can also use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Apply an ice pack or a clean, soft washcloth filled with ice to the affected area. Repeat as needed every four hours. Baking soda pasteApplying a baking soda paste may help dry out lesions and relieve itching. To do this, dip a wet cotton ball or Q-tip into a small amount of pure baking soda, and dab it on the sore. Cornstarch pasteCorn starch paste may also dry out lesions and relieve itching. Dip a wet cotton ball or Q-tip into a small amount of cornstarch, and apply it to the affected area. Topical garlicOlder research suggests that garlic may have antiviral properties against both strains of herpes. Crush up a fresh clove of garlic and mix it with olive oil to dilute. You can apply this mixture to a sore up to three times per day. Topical apple cider vinegar (ACV)ACV is known for its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. To reap some of these benefits, mix one-part ACV with three-parts warm water and apply to the affected area. Diet changesEating the right foods and avoiding certain ingredients may boost your immune system and, in turn, help your body fight off the herpes virus. Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that changing your diet could help prevent outbreaks. Although more research is needed, clinical evidence does support some of these claims. Antioxidant-rich veggiesEating vegetables rich in antioxidants can boost your immune systemTrusted Source and may minimize inflammation. Cauliflower, spinach, kale, and tomatoes are rich in free-radical binding antioxidants. They also contain more lysine than arginine, an amino acid ratio that’s important to suppressing herpes. Omega-3 fatty acidsOmega 3-chain fatty acids can be used to help your immune system fight chronic inflammatory conditionsTrusted Source. Salmon, mackerel, flaxseed, and chia seeds are rich in these fatty acids. ProteinConsuming a healthy level of protein is vitalTrusted Source to fighting off the herpes virus and other pathogens. Keep your diet high in protein and low in saturated fat by eating lots of almonds, eggs, and oats. Vitamin CResearchers have demonstrated that vitamin C can efficiently speed the healing of herpes outbreaks. It may also help prolong the time between outbreaks. Colorful fruits and veggies like bell peppers, oranges, and strawberries are rich in vitamin C. Mango and papaya fruits also contain the vitamin, without adding a high amount of lysine to your diet. ZincZinc therapy may reduceTrusted Source the amount of herpes outbreaks you have while giving you a longer time between outbreaks. You can increase the zinc in your diet by eating wheat germ, chick peas, lamb, and pork. Vitamin B complexB vitamins can boost your immune response to help your body fight the herpes virus. You can get vitamin B from green beans, eggs, spinach, and broccoli. AcidAcidic food may break open cold sores before they’re healed. Fruit juice, beer, sodas, and processed foods all tend to be more acidic. Limit these foods and consider water or sparkling seltzer instead. L-arginineAvoid foods that contain high levels of arginine whenever you can. Chocolate is particularly rich in this amino acid, which some people claim can trigger herpes symptoms. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a vitamin-dense option like dried mango or apricots, instead. Added sugarYour body converts added sugars to acid. Avoid foods high in added sugar and consider naturally sweet treats, like bananas and oranges, for your desserts. Processed or preservative heavyProcessed food contains synthetic preservatives that may contribute to oxidative stress. Keeping oxidative stress levels low may help promote healing during outbreaks. Try cutting processed foods like freezer meals, refined grain products, and candies from your diet. AlcoholAlcohol breaks down in your body to the equivalent of a sugar. High sugar consumption is linked to white blood cell suppression — which can make outbreaks more likely. If you’re going to consume alcohol, do so in moderation, and choose a less acidic beverage, like wine. SupplementsSupplements may help by supporting your immune system and helping your body suppress outbreaks. But supplements aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) like drugs. You should always talk to a healthcare provider before taking any supplement. Some supplements may interact with over-the-counter and prescription medications. Shop for zinc, vitamin B complex, lysine, and probiotic supplements.ZincTaking zinc may reduce how many herpes outbreaks you experience each year. Taking 30 milligrams (mg) per day could be enough to help fight herpes. Vitamin B complexVitamin B complex supplements contain all of the B-class vitamins. These vitamins boost your energy, help your metabolism, and support healthy cell growth. These functions are essential when herpes is attacking your body in an active outbreak. Different supplements on the market will vary in how much of each B vitamin a B-complex product contains. LysineLysine is an amino acid that your body uses for digestion and healthy cell growth. Research on lysine’s potential to fight herpes simplex is ongoing. Some reports suggest that a daily dose of 500 mg to 3,000 mg of lysine may be beneficial. ProbioticsCertain strains of probiotics have been shownTrusted Source to help fight off herpes infections. Taking probiotics may also strengthen your immune system through other ways. Eating yogurt is the first place to start. Probiotic supplements containing strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus are known to improve immune function. Topical herbs, oils, and other solutionsWhen used correctly, certain topicals can help speed up healing, relieve itching, and numb discomfort. Many topical ingredients such as essential oils can burn through your skin barrier if they aren’t diluted. Carrier oils, like jojoba and coconut oil, are important for using topical ingredients safely. All of the topicals listed below should be used with a carrier oil unless otherwise noted. You should also do a patch test before performing a full application. This is the only way to ensure that you’re not applying an irritating substance to an already sensitive area. You can do a simple patch test by following these steps:
Purchase a carrier oil for the following topicals: essential oils (tea tree, chamomile, ginger, thyme, eucalyptus), witch hazel, lemon balm extract, and neem extract. Aloe veraAloe vera has proven wound-accelerating properties. These properties may sootheTrusted Source and heal herpes lesions. Pure aloe vera gel can be applied directly to nearly every area of the body without being diluted. Tea tree oilTea tree oil is a potent antiviral ingredient that’s been shownTrusted Source to help with herpes. Tea tree oil must be diluted with a carrier oil before you use it on a cold sore or genital herpes. Witch hazelWitch hazel has significant antiviral propertiesTrusted Source. Some people can use pure witch hazel without experiencing irritation, while others find that it stings. You should use a diluted solution if you have sensitive skin. Manuka honeyOlder research suggestsTrusted Source that topical application of manuka honey may be as effective as acyclovir at treating HSV-1 and HSV-2. Manuka honey can be applied directly without dilution. Goat milkGoat milk contains an antiviral agentTrusted Source that may work against herpes simplex. It must be diluted with a carrier oil. General do’s and don’tsHere are some general tips for outbreak management. If you have a cold sore…
5/31/2019 0 Comments How to Get Rid of Cold Sores Naturally By Christine Ruggeri, CHHC November 15, 2018Did you know that 90 percent of the population gets at least one cold sore in a lifetime, and 40 percent of American adults repeatedly get cold sores? They can be painful, uncomfortable and downright unattractive, beginning as a blister and eventually forming a crust. Cold sores are commonly mistaken for canker sores, especially in children. Canker sores, however, involve only the mucous membrane, and they’re never on the outside of the mouth.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), an infection that may cause only a single cold sore or an outbreak of several cold sores. Until a cold sore is scabbed or crusted, it’s extremely contagious and can even be spread to other parts of the body, including the eyes and genitals — though most cold sores are nongenital. The most common conventional treatments for cold sores are antiviral creams and oral medications, which can reduce the duration of cold sores by a few days but aren’t completely reliable. There are natural cold sore remedies, however, that are safe, inexpensive and effective in boosting the immune system, relieving pain and swelling, and reducing the duration and frequency of cold sores. What Are Cold Sores?Cold sores, or fever blisters, are painful infections caused by the herpes simplex virus. They can show up anywhere on the body but are most commonly seen on the outside of the mouth, lips, cheeks, nose and fingers. A cold sore looks like a blister, and it usually lasts for seven to 10 days, at which time it’s contagious. Over time, it breaks and oozes, then develop a yellow scab, with new skin growing underneath. Although a cold sore infection is generally not serious, it can be a major issue for people with depressed immune systems due to disorders or medications. Even after a cold sore crusts over and heals, the herpes virus remains, and it can cause future outbreaks in the same area of the mouth or face. (1) When cold sores spread, it’s called autoinoculation, and these simplex infections can cause a lesion to appear when it spreads. Here are the different ways to describe herpes simplex cold sores, according to TeensHealth from Nemours: (1a)
13 Natural Cold Sore Remedies1. Eat Immune-Boosting Foods Cold sores can be very serious for people with weakened immune systems, so eating foods that serve as immune system boosters can be very helpful. Probiotic foods like yogurt, apple cider vinegar, kimchi, sauerkraut and natto boost the immune system naturally. (2) Vegetables are also great sources of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that can help you to fight off infections. Try this Immune-Boosting Juice Recipe to keep cold sores at bay. 2. Supplement with Vitamin EVitamin E soothes the skin and may help to relieve pain and discomfort from cold sores. It repairs damaged skin, reduces inflammation and has antioxidant properties. (3) Vitamin E can be taken as oral capsules, or you can boost your levels with vitamin E-rich foods, such as almonds, spinach, sweet potatoes, avocados, sunflower seeds and olive oil. 3. Supplement with Vitamin CBoost your white blood cell count with vitamin C, which helps defend your body against invaders. Take a vitamin C capsule to boost immunity and promote skin health — and, of course, heal cold sores. (4) You can also eat vitamin C foods like oranges, red peppers, green peppers, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, strawberries, grapefruit and kiwi. 4. Boost Your Zinc IntakeZinc is an essential trace mineral needed to maintain health, reduce inflammation and boost immunity. It’s usually available in various forms, including lozenges, syrups, gels and capsules. These supplements can contain zinc in the form of zinc gluconate, zinc sulfate or zinc acetate. A study published in Alternative Therapies for Health and Medicine found that zinc oxide/glycine cream is an effective treatment for an oral herpes infection. Participants who began treatment with a zinc oxide/glycine cream within 24 hours of experiencing signs and symptoms of a cold sore noticed a significantly shorter duration of cold sore lesions than the subjects treated with a placebo cream. (5) You can also take advantage of these zinc benefits and avoid zinc deficiency — which can increase the risk of cold sores — with certain foods, including grass-fed beef, chickpeas, cashews, pumpkin seeds yogurt, chicken, turkey, eggs, salmon and mushrooms. 5. Take L-lysineL-lysine is an amino acid that works as a natural herpes treatment when taken by mouth or applied directly to the skin. It works by preventing the herpes virus from growing. Take 1,000 milligrams three times daily, and eat foods that contain L-lysine, such as legumes, fish, turkey, chicken and vegetables. Several double-blind and placebo-controlled studies have found that L-lysine appears to be an effective agent for the reduction of occurrence, severity and healing time for recurrent herpes simplex virus infection. (6, 7) 6. Use SunscreenDirect sunlight or sunburns may trigger an attack, so using sunscreen or avoiding heavy sun exposure may reduce the number of cold sore recurrences that you experience. (8) Make sure to apply the sunscreen on the lips throughout the day, which can be done easily with a SPF lip balm. I suggest using lemon balm if you can. Also, be careful when selecting sunscreen, opting for 100 percent natural and organic sunscreen. That can be difficult, as the majority of sunscreens are toxic, so make sure you avoid the common brands that actually cause more harm than good. 7. Apply Aloe Vera GelAloe vera gel is used to treat skin conditions like cold sores. It contains antioxidant vitamins, enzymes, minerals, fatty acids and hormones that help with healing and preventing further infection. (9) Use aloe vera gel on a cold sore throughout the day to ease the discomfort and speed the healing process. 8. Use Peppermint Essential OilThe antiviral constituents in peppermint oil make it a great tool for healing cold sores. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine tested peppermint oil’s inhibitory activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2. Researchers found that peppermint oil exhibited high levels of virucidal activity against both HSV-1 and HSV-2. After three hours of incubation of herpes simplex virus with peppermint oil, an antiviral activity of about 99 percent was demonstrated. The oil proved to be more effective in the early stages of symptoms. (10) 9. Apply Vanilla Oil or ExtractApply vanilla oil or vanilla extract to the area of concern as soon as you feel a tingling sensation. Soak a cotton ball with vanilla extract and hold it in place for one to two minutes; do this four times daily until the cold sore heals. The anti-inflammatory activity helps heal the cold sore and reduce pain. Vanilla oil also helps fight the infection and speed up the healing process. (11) Look for vanilla Co2 total extract, which is the highest quality. It can be pricey, so using the extract you use for cooking or making a vanilla oil infusion by soaking vanilla beans in a carrier oil or jar of alcohol works too. 10. Drink Echinacea TeaEchinacea can be especially useful for people with a weakened immune system. It’s most commonly used for people trying to get rid of a cold, but it’s a powerful immune system stimulator that can provide a signifiant therapeutic value, even when trying to fight a virus — like herpes simplex. (12) Drinking echinacea tea is an easy way to boost your immune system, reduce inflammation and alleviate pain too. 11. Get a New Toothbrush Your toothbrush may carry the herpes simplex virus that caused the cold sore in the first place, so it’s best to chuck it and get a new one. If you have a habit of touching the toothpaste tube when applying toothpaste to your toothbrush, it’s a good idea to throw that out too. 12. Keep Your Hands Off A cold sore is highly contagious until it crusts over and heals, so keep your hands off to avoid spreading the infection. If you use a face towel or cold compress, put it directly in the dirty laundry pile afterward. 13. Ice ItApply ice or a cold compress to the cold sore to reduce inflammation and slow down blood flow to the sore. This helps relieve pain and swelling. Bonus Remedies: 14. Utilize Tea Tree OilSmall studies have seen modest improvements when using a tea tree oil ointment. You can try tea tree oil in gel form as soon as you feel the tingle of a cold sore to see if it helps you personally — the earlier you apply it, the more significant the results are likely to be. (13) 13. Use Hydrogen PeroxideBy drying out and cleaning the affected area, hydrogen peroxide may be a useful cold sore remedy. It is thought that peroxide acts with antiseptic quality and may be able to kill off the HSV virus, which is particularly sensitive to the effects of peroxide. (14) 12. Apply Lemon BalmThis natural remedy has been found to significantly kill off the herpes virus responsible for cold sores. When dabbing on lemon balm extract in cream form, research shows that the intervals between herpes breakouts become longer, the healing period shortens and the symptoms, such as itching and burning, seem to decrease. (15) Interestingly, because of the way that lemon balm works to achieve this, there is no risk of a resistance to the herpes virus forming after repeated uses. (16) The same results seem to exist when using lemon balm essential oil as an ointment. (17) Cold Sores vs. Canker SoresCold sores are often confused with canker sores, but the two are very different, looks aside. Here is how to distinguish between a cold sore and a canker sore: Cold Sores
Cold Sore SymptomsThere are usually several stages of a cold sore, including: 1. Itching and BurningA day or two before a blister appears, you may experience a tingling, itching and even burning sensation around the lips. This is the first sign that a cold sore is developing, typically beginning with that tingle. 2. BlistersWithin 24–48 hours, a blister, which is a small fluid-filled bump, appears on the border of the lips and skin. 3. Oozing and ScabbingEventually, the blister or blisters will break open and begin to ooze fluid, and this can be quite painful. It will then dry out and crust over, creating a scab that protects the new skin growing underneath. Each cold sore experience is different, and first-time cold sores can be more painful than recurring cold sores. Plus, first-time cold sores may take more time to heal, sometimes taking up to two to four weeks before they heal completely. During an outbreak, you may experience a headache, painful gums, sore throat, muscle aches, fever, nausea, vomiting and swollen lymph nodes. If a cold sore persists longer than a week, and there are no signs of breakage or crusting, it’s wise to call your health care provider. You may also want to notify your dentist or physician if a sore makes it hard for you to talk or swallow, if you develop a fever, or if you experience a second outbreak of blisters. What Causes Cold Sores? What are the infections cold sores stem from? A cold sore develops as a result of the herpes simplex virus, which is an infection that may cause only a single cold sore or an outbreak of several cold sores. Fever blisters are typically caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, and they can be spread by kissing and sharing face towels, cups, spoons or forks when the sore is present. Herpes simplex virus type 2, on the other hand, usually causes sores in the genital area and is spread by sexual contact or when a mother with genital herpes is delivering her baby vaginally. Type 2 herpes can sometimes cause mouth sores, although sores around the vagina and penis are more common. A person with a cold sore (from herpes simplex virus type 1) can spread the infection and give a person genital lesions during oral sex. It’s not limited to just the mouth and lip area. HSV can also spread and infect other areas of the body, such as the eyes or the brain, but this is rare. (18) Once a person to exposed to HSV-1, the cold sore typically appears in about a week, and the virus can be reactivated later in life, causing more cold sore outbreaks. HSV-1 can be activated after a period of stress or illness, as a result of poor nutrition, when dealing with an upper respiratory infection, when menstruating, or even after sunlight exposure. Dental procedures that stretch the lip may also trigger the virus to reappear. (19) To prevent the spread of herpes simplex, do not kiss anyone who has a cold core. Using sunscreen on the lips may also prevent cold sores that are caused by sun exposure. If you already have a cold sore, prevent the spread of infection by keeping the area clean and leaving it alone. Try not to touch the sore or pick at the crust. It’s also important that you avoid kissing anyone while you have a blister, and don’t share utensils, glasses or towels that make contact with your mouth. Conventional Cold Sore TreatmentThe most commonly prescribed medications for relieving pain and discomfort from a cold sore are acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex). These antiviral drugs don’t cure the virus, and they don’t help once the blister appears. They have to be applied when you can feel a cold sore coming on in order to be effective. (15) Several studies have investigated the efficacy of oral antiviral medication in the treatment of cold sores. The medication must be taken when symptoms first appear in order to be effective. Study results vary, but most suggest that antiviral medications reduce the duration of symptoms by one or two days, especially when taken at higher doses. When acyclovir was tested on 149 patients who took 200 milligrams five times daily for five days, it had no effect on the duration of pain or the time to recovery. However, in another study, 174 patients reported a reduction in the duration of the symptoms after taking 400 milligrams five times daily for five days. (16, 17) The most frequent reported side effects of oral antiviral medications are headache and nausea, which depend on the dose and duration of treatment. Anesthetic and antiviral creams are also used to treat cold sores, such as Abreva. In a small, randomized and controlled study, seven patients tested lidocaine and prilocaine cream, and this treatment reduced the mean duration of cold sore symptoms. The efficacy of antiviral creams, such as acyclovir and penciclovir, has also been evaluated. Both creams reduced the duration of cold sore pain and time to recovery, but they must be applied several times throughout the day, especially penciclovir. (18) Takeaways on Cold Sores

by Paul Fassa (The Best Years in Life) The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared glyphosate a “probable carcinogenic”, which ranks higher than “possible carcinogenic” and is the last ranking before carcinogenic. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world. Roundup was designed to be used for GMO cotton farming, which has become more the norm than the exception. The GMO cotton seeds were genetically engineered to withstand the weed killing Roundup while other plants and weeds wither away before they can interfere with the cotton crop. Unlike other agrochemicals, there is no way to externally remove any toxic residue. The plants uptake the week killer's glyphosate and remains within the crop's featured components. There are two types of tampon materials, synthetic fibers, such as rayon and others, and all cotton. Many even knowledgeable women aren't aware of cancer dangers from tampons using GMO cotton that has become ubiquitous with cotton farming.
